Petra is a DJ, dancer, writer and event organizer based in Brooklyn, NY and Berkeley, CA.
Petra has been an avid dancer since she could walk, and her love of dance sparked her career as a DJ. As a youth, she studied Brazilian dance with Conceicao Damasceno, performing at parties, festivals and the annual SF Carnival parade. In her teen years she continued her dance studies in Classical Indian, Afro-Cuban Folkloric, West African, Jazz and Hip-Hop. She learned to dance at a variety of parties-- in basements, backyards and parking lots, and these eclectic dance circles formed her understanding of how parites can bring people together, empower communities and lift spirits.
At nineteen years old, Petra worked with friends to throw a monthly dance party in Washington Heights, creating a haven for their peers to let loose and get down, in the midst of a club scene that was often hostile or downright dangerous for young women. In 2009 Petra inherited a large collection of classic hip-hop records from a retired uptown DJ, and she began studying the art and science of spinning records. Petra's first club night was a Friday night residency at Bembe in Brooklyn, and in 2011 she became a resident at DJ Rekha's Basement Bhangra. Over the last six years, Petra has played across NYC and her native Bay Area, alongside live performers, at weddings and on her weekly radio show "Hip-Hop & Her Family." She continues to study dancefloors everywhere.
